2. Grammar & Sentences

ใฏ โ€” Topic Marker (main message comes after ใฏ)

ใฏ introduces what you are talking about. The important information โ€” the predicate โ€” follows ใฏ.

  • ็งใฏๆ—ฅๆœฌไบบใงใ™ใ€‚(Watashi wa nihonjin desu.) โ€” I am Japanese.
  • ใ‚ซใƒผใƒฉใ•ใ‚“ใฏใƒ•ใƒฉใƒณใ‚นไบบใงใ™ใ€‚(Kaara-san wa furansujin desu.) โ€” Carla is French.
  • ใƒŠใƒซใƒˆใฏใซใ‚“ใ˜ใ‚ƒใงใ™ใ€‚(Naruto wa ninja desu.) โ€” Naruto is a ninja.
  • ใ“ใฎใใคใฏ้ซ˜ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Kono kutsu wa takai desu.) โ€” These shoes are expensive.
  • J-POPใฏๆ—ฅๆœฌใฎ้Ÿณๆฅฝใงใ™ใ€‚(J-POP wa nihon no ongaku desu.) โ€” J-pop is Japanese music.

ใฏ for contrast โ€” when comparing two things, both subjects take ใฏ:

  • ๆ—ฅๆœฌใฎๅคใฏๆš‘ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ใ€ๅ†ฌใฏๅฏ’ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Nihon no natsu wa atsui desu. Demo, fuyu wa samui desu.) โ€” Summer in Japan is hot. But winter is cold.
  • ๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชžใฏ่ฉฑใ›ใพใ™ใ€‚ใงใ‚‚ๆผขๅญ—ใฏๆ›ธใ‘ใพใ›ใ‚“ใ€‚(Nihongo wa hanasemasu. Demo kanji wa kakemasen.) โ€” I can speak Japanese. But I can't write kanji.
  • ่‚‰ใฏๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ€‚ใ•ใ‹ใชใฏใใ‚‰ใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Niku wa suki desu. Sakana wa kirai desu.) โ€” I like meat. I hate fish.

ใŒ โ€” New / Important Information (main info comes before ใŒ)

ใŒ highlights the subject as the key new piece of information.

  • ๅ‹ใ ใกใŒๆฅใพใ™ใ€‚(Tomodachi ga kimasu.) โ€” A friend is coming.
  • ้›จใŒใตใ‚Šใพใ™ใ€‚(Ame ga furimasu.) โ€” It will rain.
  • ๅŒ—ๆตท้“ใงใ‚†ใใŒใตใฃใฆใ„ใพใ™ใ€‚(Hokkaido de yuki ga futte imasu.) โ€” It is snowing in Hokkaido.

  • ้ ญใŒใ„ใŸใ„ใ‚“ใงใ™ใ€‚(Atama ga itain desu.) โ€” I have a headache.

Combined ใฏ โ€ฆ ใŒ Pattern

When the topic is set with ใฏ and a preference or ability verb follows, the object of that verb takes ใŒ:

  • ใฟใใŠใ•ใ‚“ใฏ้ŸณๆฅฝใŒๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ€‚(Mikio-san wa ongaku ga suki desu.) โ€” Mikio likes music.
  • ใ“ใจใฟใ•ใ‚“ใฏ็ฉบๆ‰‹ใŒใจใใ„ใงใ™ใ€‚(Kotomi-san wa karate ga tokui desu.) โ€” Kotomi is good at karate.

3. Learning Context

  • ใฏ rule: The end of the sentence is the main point โ€” whatever comes after ใฏ is what you want to convey.
  • ใŒ rule: The beginning of the sentence is the main point โ€” ใŒ marks new or highlighted information, not a contrasting topic.
  • Fixed ใŒ words: ๅฅฝใใงใ™ใ€ไธŠๆ‰‹ใงใ™ใ€ใจใใ„ใงใ™ใ€ใงใใพใ™ always take ใŒ โ€” even inside a ใฏโ€ฆใŒ sentence.
