3. Reading: Sylvia's Job Interview
Translation:
Manager: You're here for an interview for a part-time job, aren't you? Please come in. What's your name? Sylvia: Thank you, I will come in. I'm Sylvia. Pleased to meet you. Manager: Please tell me your reason for applying. Sylvia: OK. I applied because I like talking to people and because I can make delicious coffee. Manager: I see. The salary is 1,200 yen. The (working) hours are from 4pm until 8pm. Can you come 4 days a week? Sylvia: I'm sorry, would 3 days a week be okay? Manager: That's fine. Well then, please start on Monday. Sylvia: I will, thank you.
Comprehension Notes:
- Sylvia came for an アルバイト (part-time job) interview — not a permanent position.
- She will work 3 days a week (the manager offered 4, she negotiated to 3).
- Her reasons for applying: 話すことが好き (likes talking to people) and おいしいコーヒーを作れる (can make delicious coffee).
4. Learning Context
- Topic: Developing fluency — real interview dialogue and frequency expressions
- Culture Note: Negotiating days/hours during an interview is acceptable in Japan for アルバイト roles. Using すみません before making a request softens the ask politely.
- Grammar Focus: (period)に(frequency)for how often; interview dialogue patterns
