2. Grammar & Sentences

Metric Units — メートル / センチ / キロ

Japan uses the metric system. The three core units in this lesson:

Full formShort formUsed for
メートル—Distance, height
センチメートルセンチSmaller lengths, shoe sizes
キログラムキロWeight
  • 富士山(ふじ山)は3,776メートルです。(Fujisan wa san-zen-nana-hyaku-nanajuu-roku meetoru desu.) — Mount Fuji is 3,776 metres.
  • このくつは25センチです。(Kono kutsu wa nijuu-go senchi desu.) — These shoes are 25 centimetres.
  • エコノミークラスは20キロまでです。(Ekonomii kurasu wa nijuu kiro made desu.) — Economy class is up to 20 kg.
  • かみを10センチ切りたいです。(Kami wo juu senchi kiritai desu.) — I want to have 10 cm cut off my hair.
  • やく1メートル36センチです。(Yaku ichi meetoru sanjuu-roku senchi desu.) — These are approximately 1 m 36 cm.
  • そのスーツケースはやく4キロです。(Sono suutsukeesu wa yaku yon kiro desu.) — The suitcase is approximately 4 kg.
  • しば犬はやく40センチ、10キロになります。(Shiba-inu wa yaku yonjuu senchi, juu kiro ni narimasu.) — Shiba inu grow to approximately 40 cm and 10 kg.

から~まで — From … To / Up to

Use から (from) + まで (to / up to) to describe a range of distance or a limit.

  • 私の家から学校まで、やく800メートルです。(Watashi no ie kara gakkou made, yaku happyaku meetoru desu.) — It is approximately 800 metres from my home to school.
  • エコノミークラスは20キロまでです。(Ekonomii kurasu wa nijuu kiro made desu.) — Economy class is up to 20 kg.

しんちょう vs たいじゅう vs 長さ — Body Measurements

  • 私のしんちょうは120センチメートルです。(Watashi no shinchou wa hyaku-nijuu senchimeetoru desu.) — My height is 120 centimetres.
  • こうたさんのしん長は180センチメートルです。(Kouta-san no shinchou wa hyaku-hachijuu senchimeetoru desu.) — Kouta's height is 180 centimetres.
  • 私のたいじゅうは60キログラムです。(Watashi no taijuu wa rokujuu kiroguramu desu.) — My weight is 60 kilograms.
  • バスケが大好きです。しん長が170センチほしいです。(Basuke ga daisuki desu. Shinchou ga hyaku-nanajuu senchi hoshii desu.) — I love basketball. I want to be 170 cm tall.

3. Learning Context

  • Abbreviations: センチメートル → センチ and キログラム → キロ are the natural spoken forms. センチメートル is not wrong, just more formal.
  • しんちょう vs 長さ: しんちょう(身長)is exclusively for body height. For the length of objects or distances, use 長(なが)さ instead.
  • 100 kg pronunciation: ひゃっキロ (not ひゃくキロ) — the く contracts before キ.
  • Mixed units: When combining metres and centimetres, state メートル first then センチ — e.g. 1メートル36センチ. Alternatively, say the total in センチ alone: 136センチ.
  • Kanji notes: 身長 — 長 means "long/length" (readings: なが, ちょう). 体重 — 体 means "body" (readings: からだ, たい).
  • Judo weight classes: 60, 66, 73, 81, 91, 100 kg — noted for number pronunciation practice. 100 kg = ひゃっキロ.
  • Japan is metric: Heights and lengths are described in centimetres, metres, and kilometres — not inches, feet, yards, or miles.
