さ — Adjective → Noun Conversion

Appending さ to an adjective converts it into a noun expressing that quality.

i-adjective: drop い, add さ

na-adjective / noun-adjective: add さ directly

Key sentences:

• 日本の夏のあつさが大きらいです。(Nihon no natsu no atsusa ga daikirai desu.) — I hate the heat of the Japanese summer.
• このまちのきれいさが好きです。(Kono machi no kireira ga suki desu.) — I like the prettiness of this town.

ながら — Simultaneous Actions (Review)

Structure: Verb (masu stem) + ながら + main verb

• 電話しながら運転してはいけません。車を止めてください。(Denwa shinagara unten shite wa ikemasen. Kuruma wo tomete kudasai.) — You must not drive while on the phone. Please stop the car.
• ドーナツを食べながらしゅくだいをします。(Doonatsu wo tabenagara shukudai wo shimasu.) — I do homework while eating a doughnut.
• はい、きのうテレビを見ながらしゅくだいをしました。(Hai, kinou terebi wo minagara shukudai wo shimashita.) — Yes, yesterday I did homework while watching TV.

Measurements (Review)

• 身長と体重を教えてください。(Shinchou to taijuu wo oshiete kudasai.) — Please tell me your height and weight.
• かみを10センチ切りたいです。(Kami wo juu senchi kiritai desu.) — I want to have 10 cm cut off my hair.
• やく1メートル36センチです。(Yaku ichi meetoru sanjuu-roku senchi desu.) — It is approximately 1 m 36 cm.

けいけん — Experience (Review)

• おすもうさんに会ったけいけんがあります。(Osumo-san ni atta keiken ga arimasu.) — I have experience meeting a sumo wrestler.
• やく二年間のけいけんがあります。(Yaku ninen-kan no keiken ga arimasu.) — I have approximately two years of experience.

3. Learning Context

• さ conversion rule: i-adjectives drop い before adding さ — あつい → あつさ (not あついさ). Na-adjectives and noun-adjectives take さ directly.
• ながら rule anchor: Masu stem only — never て form or plain form before ながら.
• Experience hierarchy: たことがあります (have done at least once) vs けいけんがあります (have ongoing / accumulated experience).
• Measurement nouns: 高さ (height of things), 長さ (length), 大きさ (size), 重さ (weight of things), 身長 (person's height), 体重 (person's weight).
