2. Dialogue — Keiko and Robert

Full dialogue (Japanese):

• けいこ：ロバートさん、すみません。長い間待ちましたか。
• ロバート：だいじょうぶですよ。本を読みながら待っていましたから。
• けいこ：うれしそうですね。
• ロバート：はい、まだ新かんせんにのったことがないんです。
• けいこ：そうですか。のる前におべんとうを買いませんか。新かんせんに乗りながらおべんとうを食べられますよ。
• ロバート：はい。わあ、たくさんありますね。じゃあ、これがいいです。
• けいこ：飲み物も買ってくださいね。（新かんせんにのる）
• ロバート：あ、ふじ山！ふじ山を見ながらおべんとうを食べるのはいいですね。いつかふじ山にのぼりたいです。

Translation:

• Keiko: I'm sorry, Robert. Have you been waiting long?
• Robert: It's fine because I was reading while waiting.
• Keiko: You look happy, don't you?
• Robert: Yes, I have never been on the shinkansen before.
• Keiko: Is that so? Shall we buy bento before boarding? While we're on the shinkansen, we can eat bento.
• Robert: Yes. Wow, so many choices. I will take this one, then.
• Keiko: Please buy your drink, too. (They board the shinkansen.)
• Robert: Wow, Mt. Fuji! It's nice to eat bento while looking at Mt. Fuji. I want to climb Mt. Fuji one day.

ながら — Simultaneous Actions (Review)

Structure: Verb 1 (masu stem) + ながら + Verb 2

• 本を読みながら待っていました。(Hon wo yominagara matte imashita.) — I was reading while waiting.
• 仕事をしながらコーヒーを飲みます。(Shigoto wo shinagara koohii wo nomimasu.) — While working, I drink coffee.
• ふじ山を見ながらおべんとうを食べる。(Fujisan wo minagara obentou wo taberu.) — Eat bento while looking at Mt. Fuji.

そうです — "Looks / Seems Like"

Attach そうです directly to an adjective stem to express an impression.

i-adjective: drop い, add そうです

• うれしそうですね。(Ureshisou desu ne.) — You look happy, don't you?
• 友だちがいなくてさびしそうです。(Tomodachi ga inakute sabishisou desu.) — He doesn't have friends and he looks lonely.

たことがない / けいけんがある — Experience

• まだ新かんせんにのったことがないんです。(Mada shinkansen ni notta koto ga nain desu.) — I have never been on the shinkansen (yet).
• 日本で仕事をしたけいけんがあります。(Nihon de shigoto wo shita keiken ga arimasu.) — I have experience working in Japan.

のる前に — Before Boarding

Structure: Verb (dictionary form) + 前に

• のる前におべんとうを買いませんか。(Noru mae ni obentou wo kaimasen ka.) — Shall we buy bento before boarding?

4. Learning Context

• ながら verb order: The background / ongoing action uses the masu stem + ながら; the main / foreground action is the final verb. 本を読みながら待つ = waiting (main) while reading (background).
• そうです vs ようです: そうです (looks like, based on visual impression) vs ようです (seems like, based on reasoning). At B1 level, そうです + adjective is the primary pattern.
• まだ〜たことがない: まだ (not yet) + た-form + ことがない = have never done [yet]. The んです ending adds explanation/context — "the reason is I've never..."
• Dialogue comprehension notes: Robert was reading a book while waiting (not buying bento — common trap). Keiko suggested おべんとう AND 飲み物. Robert has NOT been on the shinkansen before (False). Keiko said Robert looks うれしそう (happy), not さびしそう.
