Casual Passive โ€” Plain Form

The passive voice in casual speech uses the plain (dictionary-register) passive form. The key marker is dropping ใ„ from ใฆ-ใ„ใ‚‹ contractions.

Passive formation:

Verb typeDictionaryPassive (plain)
Group 1 (ใ†)ๆ›ธใๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใ‚‹

Group 2 (ใ‚‹)ไฝœใ‚‹ โ†’ Group 1ไฝœใ‚‰ใ‚Œใ‚‹
Irregularใ™ใ‚‹ใ•ใ‚Œใ‚‹

Casual contractions:

  • ๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใฆใ„ใ‚‹ โ†’ ๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใฆใ‚‹ (casual: drop the ใ„)
  • ็Ÿฅใฃใฆใ„ใŸ โ†’ ็ŸฅใฃใฆใŸ

3. Learning Context

  • Casual ใใ† vs formal ใใ†ใงใ™: Remove ใงใ™ for casual register โ€” ๆฅฝใ—ใใ†ใงใ™ โ†’ ๆฅฝใ—ใใ†. The adjective stem modification (drop ใ„) is the same in both.
  • ใคใพใ‚‰ใชใใ†: ใคใพใ‚‰ใชใ„ drops the ใ„ โ†’ ใคใพใ‚‰ใชใใ†, not ใคใพใ‚‰ใ„ใใ† or ใคใพใ‚‰ใใ†. The ใช is retained.
  • Passive agent particle: Use ใซ for a person agent (ๅ…ˆ็”Ÿใซใปใ‚ใ‚‰ใ‚ŒใŸ โ€” praised by the teacher) and ใง for material/medium (ๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชžใงๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใฆใ„ใ‚‹ โ€” written in Japanese).
  • Dropped ใ„ in casual speech: ใฆ-ใ„ใ‚‹ contractions: ๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใฆใ„ใ‚‹ โ†’ ๆ›ธใ‹ใ‚Œใฆใ‚‹, ็Ÿฅใฃใฆใ„ใŸ โ†’ ็ŸฅใฃใฆใŸ. This is standard in spoken Japanese and informal writing.
  • Sentence-final ใฎ: ใฎ at the end of a question (ๅปบใฆใ‚‰ใ‚ŒใŸใฎ๏ผŸ) softens the tone โ€” common in casual feminine or child speech, but used broadly in informal contexts.
  • ็ŸฅใฃใฆใŸ๏ผŸ: Past form of ็Ÿฅใฃใฆใ„ใ‚‹ in casual register โ€” "did you know?" Used as a rhetorical hook when sharing surprising facts (ใˆๆ–‡ๅญ—ใฏๆ—ฅๆœฌใงไฝœใ‚‰ใ‚ŒใŸใ€‚็ŸฅใฃใฆใŸ๏ผŸ).
  • ็™บๆ˜Ž in passive: ็™บๆ˜Žใ•ใ‚ŒใŸ (was invented) โ€” same ็™บ kanji from section-08. Passive ใ•ใ‚Œใ‚‹ attaches to ใ™ใ‚‹-verb compounds.
