1. Vocabulary List

Used to express that you have made a decision to do something.

Structure: [Verb dictionary form] + ことにしました
Key Phrase: 引っこすことにしました。(Hikkosu koto ni shimashita.) — "We've decided to move house."

明日りれき書を書くことにしました。	Ashita rirekisho o kaku koto ni shimashita.	I've decided to write a CV tomorrow.
住むことにしました。	Sumu koto ni shimashita.	She has decided to live with a friend.
休むことにしました。	Yasumu koto ni shimashita.	I've decided to take a break.

Spelling note: The correct spelling is ことにしました — not ことにしました with て-form or past-tense verb before it.

Used to express that you have made a decision not to do something. Use the nai-form of the verb.

口座を開かないことにしました。	Kōza o akanai koto ni shimashita.	I've decided not to open a bank account.
たかしさんは、この近所のマンションは見ないことにしました。	Takashi-san wa, kono kinjo no manshon wa minai koto ni shimashita.	Takashi has decided not to look at an apartment in this neighbourhood.

Combine ので (because/since) with ことにしました to explain why a decision was made.

お金がかかるので、旅行に行かないことにしました。	Okane ga kakaru node, ryokō ni ikanai koto ni shimashita.	Because it costs money, I've decided not to go travelling.
七万円以下のマンションをさがすことにしました。	Nana-man en ika no manshon o sagasu koto ni shimashita.	I decided to look for an apartment with a rent of 70,000 yen or less.
