1. Vocabulary List

Used to explain the reason for an action in a natural, conversational way.

Structure: [Reason clause] + から、[Result clause]
Key Phrase: 引っこすから、じゅんびをします。(Hikkosu kara, junbi o shimasu.) — "Because I'm moving house, I'm making preparations."

Used when performing an action ahead of time in preparation for something else. Review from Chapter 5.

Structure: [Verb て-form] + おきます
Key Phrase: 本とCDをたなから出しておきます。(Hon to CD o tana kara dashite okimasu.) — "I take the books and CDs off the shelf (in advance)."

おさらをはこに入れて、ガムテープでとめます。	Osara o hako ni irete, gamu tēpu de tomemasu.	We put plates in the box and secure it with parcel tape.
ガムテープでとめます。	Gamu tēpu de tomemasu.	I secure it with parcel tape.
ここをガムテープでとめてください。	Koko o gamu tēpu de tomete kudasai.	Please secure here with parcel tape.

Note: The て-form of とめる is とめて. The て-form of 入れる is 入れて.

Used to describe the timing of an action or a condition.

Structure: [Verb dictionary form / Noun + の] + とき
Key Phrase: はさみを使うとき、ちゅう意してください。(Hasami o tsukau toki, chūi shite kudasai.) — "Please be careful when you use scissors."

Combines a reason with a polite request.

Key Phrase: これは大切なので、ふろしきでつつんでください。(Kore wa taisetsu na node, furoshiki de tsutsunde kudasai.) — "Because this is very important, please wrap it with furoshiki."

ふろしきではこをつつみます。	Furoshiki de hako o tsutsumimasu.	I wrap a box with furoshiki.
ふろしきでおべんとうをつつんで持って行きます。	Furoshiki de obentō o tsutunde motte ikimasu.	I wrap bento with furoshiki and carry it.
